The credit card processor reported an 11 percent rise in quarterly profit but cut its full-year forecast on concerns about growth overseas. Because the Dow is a price-weighted index, and Visa is the most expensive stock in the Dow, Visa had an outsized impact on it. Roughly 60 points of the Dow's decline can be attributed to Visa. Amazon's stock slumped 10 percent after the online retail giant late Thursday posted a much wider loss than analysts had forecast, hit by expenses.

Stocks close lower, Dow posts biggest weekly decline in 7 weeks
Geopolitical instability affected revenue to some extent, with a reduction in cross-border volume in areas like Russia, Ukraine, Venezuela, and the Middle East. Starbucks (SBUX) also reported after the bell Thursday. The firm reported earnings per share of 67 cents, slightly ahead of estimates of 66 cents per share and the 55 cents a share the firm earned in the year-ago period. Management also raised its full-year 2014 earnings guidance.

The index had its biggest weekly decline in 7 weeks and has alternated between gains and losses for eight straight weeks, a pattern not seen since June 2008. The S&P 500 closed nearly 10 points lower, or 0.48 percent, at http://www.todayhotstocks.com 1,978.34, the first decline after four sessions. Consumer Discretionary was the greatest laggard, and Telecommunications and Materials the only gainers among the 10 sectors. The index traded lower for the first time in four sessions, after closing at its 27th record for the year on Thursday. The Nasdaq ended higher for the week, but still suffered a loss of 22.5 points, or 0.50 percent, at 4,449.56.
